Hugh MacDonald, a member of 146, is also a four term member of the Alberta Legislature (MLA). MacDonald was first elected in the general election in 1997 and has served the Edmonton-Gold Bar riding as a Liberal MLA ever since then.

Prior to becoming an MLA, Hugh MacDonald worked as a Boilermaker for 20 years working mostly in Alberta's petroleum industry. When he was asked what the Boilermaker trade has done for him in preparing to serve as an MLA he said, "The Boilermaker trade has taught me the importance of being organized. It does not matter what job you are doing, if you know how to organize your time and the time of others, you are able to get things done quickly and efficiently."

When asked what the Boilermaker Union has done for his working career, he very clearly stated, "The Boilermaker Union has improved the financial security of my family. To my surprise, some may forget the excellent benefits and pensions that unions negotiate on behalf of their members." He further added, "The erosion of working conditions, as well as of benefits and pensions are some issues boilermakers need to be concerned about for their family futures."

Hugh MacDonald's advice for boilermakers who are thinking about getting involved in politics? "If you are interested in politics, get involved! Every person who joins the political party of their choice has the potential to make a difference."
