Boilermaker National Apprenticeship Competition

The National Training Trust Fund Trustees made a decision very early that they would support the establishment of a National Contest for graduate Boilermaker apprentices in Canada. This contest they hoped would help to motivate apprentices in the program to work for the best possible results. It was also hoped that the National Competition and Awards Banquet would focus yearly attention on industry, governments and delivery partners on the programs. The results of the competition are used to make suggested changes to the program in identified areas of weakness.

Award Title

As the apprenticeship program is jointly sponsored by the Union and Contractors, the Boilermaker National Training Trust Fund Trustees passed a motion agreeing to name the 1994 award and banquet after Donald G. Whan and in honour of an industry representative. Each year the award name is changed to honor a new contractor representative that has contributed to the progress of the programs. The Award shall be presented each year to the outstanding apprentice in Canada who wins the National Competition.

The actual award is a bronze sculpture depicting a Boilermaker journeyman mentoring an apprentice on the job. The large sculpture is held for the year following the competition by the Local area that the winning graduate apprentice received his or her training. A second smaller replica sculpture is given to the apprentice along with a monetary gift.
