The Trustees of the National Training Trust Fund support the establishment of a National Competition for graduate Boilermaker apprentices in Canada. This competition encourages and motivates apprentices to achieve their best during their apprenticeship. The National Apprenticeship Competition and Awards Banquet provide a platform for industry, governments and delivery partners to meet and discuss training advancement. Over the years the competition has helped to establish best practice in the areas of mentoring, training and development of the apprenticeship program. The competition allows the competing Boilermakers apprentices to showcase their skills and abilities to industry.
In 2010, the Trustees decided to change the format of the Apprenticeship Competition from an annual event to a biennial event. The decision to host the competition every second year allowed for the opportunity to introduce a new and exciting team element, which is realized by each Local sending a team of two candidates to the competition. When Locals select the individuals to compete on their behalf, one apprentice is selected from the class which graduated the year prior to the competition, and one apprentice is selected from the class which graduates the year of the competition.
As our industry and organization has been built on strong team work and partnerships, having teams of apprentices compete not only adds excitement to the event, but is also more representative of the crew interaction required on all successful projects. Recognizing the importance of promoting strong communication and team building skills to members and apprentices, a new Top Boilermaker Apprentice Team Award has been created to complement our standing tradition of awarding the individual Top Canadian Boilermaker Apprentice Award to one recipient from each year of graduate apprentices.

As the apprenticeship program is jointly sponsored by the Union and Contractors, the Boilermaker National Training Trust Fund Trustees passed a motion agreeing to sponsor an industry recipient award in honour of an industry representative. Each year the award name is changed to honour a new contractor representative that has contributed to the progress of the apprenticeship program. The Awards shall be presented each year to the outstanding Canadian apprentices who win the National Competition. | |
The actual award is a bronze sculpture depicting a Boilermaker journeyman mentoring an apprentice on the job. The large sculpture is held for the year following the competition by the Local area that the winning graduate apprentice received his or her training. A second smaller replica sculpture is given to the apprentice along with a monetary gift. |
