Apprenticeship

2010 Apprenticeship Competition - Preparing tube ends before installing the tube replacment part.
Boilermakers working in the trade will have completed an apprenticeship in one or more of the following trades: boilermaker, welder, or steel fabricator.

Technical training is offered at the following colleges in Canada: British Columbia Institute of Technology (www.bcit.ca), Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (www.nait.ca), Red River College in Winnipeg Manitoba (rrc.mb.ca). Technical Training is also offered at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario (www.humber.ca), New Brunswick Community College in Moncton, NB (www.nbcc.ca) and Nova Scotia Community College in Sydney NS (www.nscc.ca).

It is preferred or mandatory (provincial jurisdiction) that potential apprentices have completed their high school diploma however some provinces accept less.

Terms and conditions of apprenticeship vary slightly by province however in general the length of time served in an apprenticeship is 3 to 4 years requiring approximately 4800-6600 hours of on the job work experience including 700 to 800 hours of in-school technical training.

After completion of apprenticeship boilermakers can apply to write the Interprovincial Red Seal Certification exam which qualifies tradespersons to practice the trade across Canada. (In most provinces apprentices write or are given the option to write the red seal exam at the completion of the last year of in-school technical training).
